MoCA Adapters: Turn Your Coax Cables Into a High-Speed Network
Already have coaxial cables in your walls? MoCA adapters transform them into a fast, reliable wired network without pulling new Ethernet runs.
Most American homes built in the last 40 years have coaxial cable outlets in nearly every room — remnants of the cable TV era. MoCA (Multimedia over Coax Alliance) technology repurposes these existing coax cables as a high-speed data network, delivering wired Ethernet performance without the expense and hassle of pulling new cables through your walls.
How MoCA Works
MoCA adapters convert Ethernet signals to frequencies that travel over coaxial cable, then convert them back to Ethernet at the other end. The technology uses a different frequency band than your cable TV or internet signal, so it coexists peacefully — your cable modem, TV service, and MoCA network all share the same coax wiring without interference.
You need at least two adapters: one near your router (connected via Ethernet to the router and coax to the wall) and one at the remote location (connected via coax to the wall and Ethernet to your device). The adapters find each other automatically over the coax network.
MoCA 2.5 Performance
The current MoCA 2.5 standard delivers up to 2.5 Gbps of throughput with latency under 3.5 milliseconds. In real-world use, expect around 1 Gbps of actual data transfer — more than enough for 4K streaming, gaming, video calls, and large file transfers. This is dramatically faster and more reliable than Wi-Fi, especially through walls and floors that attenuate wireless signals.
Setup in Three Steps
- Install a PoE filter — This small coax filter goes on the line where your cable enters the house. It prevents MoCA signals from leaking onto your ISP's network and is required for proper operation
- Connect adapter A — Plug one adapter into the coax outlet near your router. Connect an Ethernet cable from the adapter to your router
- Connect adapter B — Plug the second adapter into the coax outlet in the room where you need connectivity. Connect your device to the adapter via Ethernet
That's it. No configuration required. The adapters establish their connection within about a minute.
Best MoCA Adapters
The goCoax MA2500D and Motorola MM2025 are the two most popular MoCA 2.5 adapters in the US market. Both deliver similar performance. The goCoax is typically a few dollars cheaper, while the Motorola has a slightly more polished build quality. A two-pack runs about $120 to $150, which is a fraction of what a professional Ethernet installation would cost.
MoCA is the most underrated networking technology for US homes. If you have coax in your walls, you already have a high-speed wired network — you just need the adapters to unlock it.
